In this video we look at the tragic but instructive story of the S/V Morning Dew. A newly purchased Cal 34 was captained by a father who brought along his two young sons and their cousin. They left from a marina in South Carolina and planned to voyage down the ICW to Jacksonville, Florida. Follow along on their journey and make a list of the mistakes made by the captain. Then, leave your list of mistakes made and our boating community can discuss together so we can all learn from his mistakes. NOTE: Please forward this on to your boating friends by clicking the 'share' link below and putting in your friends email. Even though the accident occurred 20 years ago...the lessons are timeless. In this episode we voyage north from Morehead City, NC, up Adam's Creek, and into the Neuse River/Pamlico Sound waterway. While traversing the Neuse I have some time to organize my thoughts and to think about what works needs to be done on the boat to equip it to fulfill our dream: 1.) safety issues- having an emergency tiller extension fabricated so that it can reach the cockpit 2.) anchoring & marina life- a windlass and a new anchor base, refrigeration connected into battery bank, water tanks, water heater, et. 3.) traveling and cruising more effectively- lines leading to cockpit for mainsail and reef points, anchoring the baby stay, dinghy motor, etc. Watch and see if I have forgotten anything! *Special Announcement* at end of video! In this episode the diver removes the propellor so we can inspect it. Then, we take it to a local Propellor shop to have it professionally evaluated to see if it can take more pitch...or if we need a new propellor. In this episode I practice with the new transmission and the old propellor! However, i really don't like revving up the engine like what is shown. Am I being too delicate? The engine is 35 years old....and only 34 hp. I know diesel engines like to run high....carbon buildup is produced when they don't go all out. However, I just feel like the engine revving is too much. In fact, the engine temp did rise with the intense maneuvering at short bursts of rpm. Is that normal? I guess I need to take the prop off and adjust the pitch. What do you think? Please watch and comment! In this episode I become...stumped! We have installed a brand new transmission. And new control cables for the gears and governor. This replaces items over thirty (30) years old. Plus, a brand new Damper Plate/Coupler to boot! But there is a problem...the ratio of the new replacement transmission is quite different that the old....especially in Forward gear. But even in Reverse I am just not getting the correct power to even maneuver out of the slip! How do I solve this problem....I barely have enough power to get out of my slip! What is the problem? Is it the 'wrong' transmission? Does it need a new, more efficient propellor rated to the new ratio? Should I get a new three (3) blade prop instead of the 2-blade I have? Is the hull and propellor fouled? Is there rope entwined around the shaft or propellor. Why the decrease in power... I don't know! In this episode we hear more from Brian the Mechanic, we work on opening up the cable/throttle connection so as to replace the old cables and we begin to dismantle an old obsolete navigation chart plotter and begin troubleshooting a very wet engine room so to control rust on and in the engine...plus some professional evaluation of our ThornyCroft T-90 marine diesel engine! In this video we continue to learn from Brian the mechanic. How to change a transmission, how to relock the dripless seal, how to inspect your marine diesel engine system and how to ensure the rust stops in your engine room, to nake just a few!. He is teaching us alot and is an excellent communicator as well as an expert marine diesel mechanic. Plus, he has his Master's Captain License and has vast experience sailing on the ocean. Watch as he confirms our 'hunch' that it was, indeed, the transmission and not fuel system issues. Best of all, he makes some suggestions and improvements to our auxiliary engine and 'power plant' for our liveaboard sailboat. What an awesome mechanic! In this episode we show how an 'Owners Group' is very important for newbie sailboat buyers...in this case we relied on our Owners Group to give us the HELP we needed! Sometimes 'Made in America' is not the highest aim...especially when such great products are made by our Allies! And especially, our greatest ally....England! What's more patriotic than honoring your greatest ally! In our case....it's the United Kingdom! They have always come through for us and us for them! Okay, I don't mean to get too historic...but... 'Yab-Yum' is a British-made boat with a British-made Engine...the very thing that many said 'dont buy a foreign-made' boat turned out to be our greatest helper!' It's fine to buy a foreign boat! Why? Buy a boat that you love...regardless of whether it was built in your country or not! Those of you who follow us....know that our transmission (gearbox) wore down...but only after thirty- six (36) years! Not too bad! We purchased a new transmission through England...(less expensive than buying it in the US...the ZF transmission is made in Italy) ..it took only three (3) days to deliver and was SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive than the same exact unit bought in the US. (even including the shipping fee!) So, two lessons.... 1.) YAY England! Our greatest ally! 2.) If you buy a sailboat make sure you have a great and functioning 'owners group'...newbie sailors always can benefit from the expertise of those who own our exact sailboat model and make! 3.) 'Made in America' only is a great goal...but made in the U.K is the next best thing! They are our greatest primary ally! "Rule Britannia...Britannia Rules the Waves!' Thank you all of our sailing family in the UK network of nations! (and this...coming from a descendant of the Irish... :) -Vin Join us on Patreon!: https://www.patreon.com/SailingNervous Make a 'one-time gift!': https://www.paypal.me/amyg793 Be Our Friend on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100009070181700 Stock media provided by Retroklips/Pond5.com item # II350013 'Sailors scrambling...' licensed under Pond5 Royalty-free license All music provided courtesy of Vin via GarageBand and Youtube Royalty-Free Music ⚓️ Binge Watch All Episodes in Order: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1Y0cgRWR6U4AyJMy8qiu3BklzIRL5fms ⚓️Click SHARE icon below to send this video to a friend!
