Are you an actively sailing liveaboard cruiser? Are you struggling with the constant money drain that comes with being a boat owner? Would you like to have the potential to make an income cruising AND watch your savings increase rather than depreciate?  If you own your own boat, have a good amount of sailing experience/qualifications[Read More]

One of the most important things a blue water cruiser needs is good tasting drinkable water. HECK - cruisers drink a lot (and some of those liquids need to be water)! You can buy bottled water but it gets expensive, is heavy to lug around and it takes up valuable space. Your best bet is to obtain and/or produce and store your own water in your water tank or tanks. In this video, I’m going to show you the three different filtrations systems we use on Britican to ensure our water is drinkable and tastes good too.

It wasn't until we used our winch one day, and it made a horrible sound, that we discovered that it needed to be serviced. I suppose we're not unlike most bluewater cruisers in that we're always learning as we go. Sometimes things break before we learn but other times our egos and pockets are spared. But before you learn through a very bad noise or a potential breakage, let me tell you that winches need to be serviced every year. And although the insides of a winch can look intimidating, servicing them is actually rather straightforward. Heavy Weather Sailing. You can’t avoid heavy weather - squalls and even storms pop up unexpectedly. Heck - last week a Tropical Storm popped up and we had absolutely no warning. So…if you’re going to become a Bluewater cruiser it’s important to know what options you have bad weather strikes. When we get hit with heavy weather or high winds - say above 30 knots, we furl the headsail into the first reef or second. When the weather gets really bad and our headsail is too large for the conditions (even when reefed), we have the ability to furl in the headsail in completely, and then move a stay from the side of the boat up to the front so to use a staysail. So, with our rigging configuration, we can essentially turn our boat into a cutter rig. A rig that has two headsails. The staysail is a smaller sail and can handle heavier weather conditions. Watch the video to listen to Simon explain our thought process on heavy weather and check out our rig configuration. If you haven't purchased a boat yet it's important to consider what your options are when heavy weather, storms, and squalls hit. After watching a weather disturbance for days we felt confident that nothing more than a bit of rain and wind was coming. Unbeknown to us, Tropical Storm Karen, formed overnight and crossed just north of our current anchorage. Knowing that serious weather bands might cause high winds and a large swell we made a decision to sail south to Grenada from St Vincent & The Grenadines. Although Britican has survived one tropical storm and three hurricanes we never stayed on board to see what it was like. This time we had no choice. And to make matters worse we had a paying guest onboard! Watch the video to find out what it was like to run from and eventually endure the wrath of Tropical Storm Karen.
