We return to Bodrum (from our visit to the Gobekli Tepe on the Turkey/Syrian border - see Ep:048) to find our boat dragging.. and we collide with a Turkish gullet which destroys some of our rigging! Undeterred we head off inland yet again to the Roman city of Ephesus (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and on to Izmir to visit some new friends, where we enjoying some kite surfing and a traditional Turkish breakfast - yum! While waiting for another meltemi to pass through, we *enjoy* our noisy Bodrum anchorage, do a final shop, replace our damaged rigging then finally check out of Turkey altogether. Bye bye Turkey - been a blast! PLEASE NOTE: YouTube have disabled comments on family channels because they sometimes feature kids. With Turkey's incursion into Northern Syria, the Turkish/Syrian border is headline news at the moment for all the wrong reasons, but when we visited in July 2019, it was relatively peaceful and safe. We sincerely hope the recent conflict finds a speedy and peaceful outcome because it is a fantastic part of the world with great people - an internationally important cultural and historical area that deserves protection and peace. Known as 'Zero Point in Time' Göbekli Tepe' is the oldest known monument in the world and changes everything we thought we knew about the evolution of civilisation. Only recently unearthed and shrouded in mystery this 'Temple' site has archaeologists baffled. The visitor centre opened only this year but with the conflict in Syria still raging, there were very few western visitors here - in fact we almost had the place to ourselves! We found the Turks friendly, warm and welcoming and enjoyed genuine Turkish hospitality unburdened by the usual trappings associated with western tourist hotspot. The 24 hour bus journey took us form Bodrum to Sanliurfa, one of Turkey's great pilgrimage cities and we dove headlong into Turkish culture and heritage by checking out the local Bazaar, the Sacred Fish Ponds (Gölbasi area) and the new museum complex. It was definitely one of the highlights of our adventures so far that will be difficult to top! This week we're visited by the coastguard to check we're complying with Turkey's strict Blue Card Scheme and more enjoyably.. by family from the UK who come sailing in Turkey with us! The kids have their birthday onboard so we visit an adventure play park in Marmaris while we have rigging and sails changed on our sailboat. When the maintenance and upgrades are complete we sail for Bodrum with a few stops on the way. The Turkish coastline in beautiful but still not immune from the curse of plastic pollution. But we don't let that spoil our fun with a hike in the hills (in unsuitable footware!) and onto the beach for nighttime camp fires! Turtle Bay is a famous nesting beach near Dalyan in Turkey, visited by rare species of turtles who come to lay their eggs (check out Darry's information film!). So we drop by for a visit ourselves before moving to a quiet anchorage for a snorkel (after some shoreline problems!) But it doesn't stay quiet for long A weird looking boat sails into the bay, turning our quiet stop into a frenzy of activity as we find ourselves doing a supermarket challenge at sea on a floating Migros Supermarket, before it leaves! Next we sail into Gocek to have our rigging replaced and end up in D-Marin, a posh marina where we find ourselves accidentally moored alongside superyachts (again!) but make full use of the facilities for the day, including chauffeur driven golf buggies and a man-made beach! Thanks To D-Marin, Emek Marin and M2 Yacht Services for all the work done while we were there. We sail all the way from Spain to Turkey to have some major upgrades completed including new standing rigging, new cockpit canopy, new sails and a double Racor filter fitted on the engine. The last time we had major works done was in Tunisia last year but we still had a lot left to do. This video shows how we prepare for the work to be done, how we had to import the rigging into Turkey and it shows a lot of the work being done. Woody also takes off on a tour of workshops and new boats in the Gocek area on the back of a motorbike. We are a family with 3 children and make our own electricity and water, homeschool the kids and do our own boat maintenance. Our dream of cruising and exploring the world's oceans is matched with a desire to live a more off-grid and sustainable lifestyle. A background as RYA instructors, flotilla skippers and RNLI crew only partly prepared us for the challenges of this live-aboard lifestyle! Thankyou for watching these videos... we hope to inspire, educate and share our journey with you so please follow the links below to support and connect with us ! After seeing how Turkish Gullets are made in a Bozburun boat yard (and seeing where Roman Abramovich had his yacht built!) we sail to Marmaris and traverse the bureaucracy of agents, crew lists and the Turkish blue card scheme aka 'poo cards'. Turkey's 'pump out' scheme is not as easy to follow as we first imagine.. and we break a few rules and we break a few rules - but it doesn't tarnish the friendliness we encounter in Turkey. After waving good buy to our crew - Pete and Alex, we say hello to a special visitor. After exploring Marmaris Bay's various anchorages, and few close encounters with day tripper boats (!) we then visit Marmaris Yacht Marina to pick up some rigging and enjoy a few home comforts! The new Greek Cruising Tax puts the wind in our sails this episode as we shoot through the Cylades to avoid it! We reflect on the lack of group activities for the kids and also have medical problems with what we think is Psoriasis. Eventually we reach Bozburun in Turkey for a well earned beer and breakfast! We arrive in Syracusa, Sicily to pick up two friends as crew to continue our journey East. First we enjoy the food from the markets, the streets, icecream parlours and a restaurant before we stock up the boat and set sail again. Apart from some bits of boat schooling, food becomes a big issue aboard as we try to eat a balanced diet and work out who stole the chocolate biscuits/ cookies. See how a small problem can become a big issue when you are stuck at sea for five days! How do you change an impeller on a water pump? My advice is if it ain't broke don't fix it! I wish I'd heeded my own advice on this maintenance job. A yearly engine service showed the impeller was fine, but I thought I'd change it anyway. WHY?! To be fair the pulley was already cracked so needed replacing so I guess it wasn't all wasted time :/ PLEASE NOTE: YouTube have disabled comments on family channels because they sometimes feature kids. We set sail on the tail end of some stormy weather and stow the dinghy on deck to make sure we don't lose it! We sail for 4 days with some pretty strong winds and big swell and decide to skip Sardinia on our way to Sicily as the wind is in the right direction. Without a weather forecast, we get caught out in a storm and our main sail gets another rip in it when we accidently gybe. It is scary not knowing how long the storm is going to last as we are quite tired after several nights at sea on night watches keeping warm and the boat and children safe. We are a family with 3 children and make our own electricity and water, homeschool the kids and do our own boat maintenance. While waiting for a weather window to cross from the Balearics to Sardinia, we sail to Isla De Cabrera ( Goat Island) and apply for a permit to stay the night. That evening, we have a drink or an expensive nightmare as described by Woody and the next morning, we head off to trek to the castle on one side of the Island to the lighthouse on the other. We learn a lot about how conservation is protecting the flora and fauna on this Island. Deciding where to mount our Viking 8-man liferaft, was relatively easy. HOW to instal it was the difficult part. Drilling holes into the deck of a boat and cutting holes in it is NOT a decision you make lightly.. especially when you don't know what you're drilling into - but here's how we fixed our biggest, heaviest and most expensive piece of safety equipment onto the foredeck in the hope that it will never, ever need to be used! Tenders (RIBs, Dinghies) are vital to the life of live-boards (as we discovered last year when we didn't have one anymore!) So we were thrilled to finally afford a good quality (Hypalon), hard bottom (aluminium) RIB that can take the entire family. Thanks to a quick payout form our insurance company, a great deal from Yacht Centre Palma and some domestic budget cuts, we bought a new AB Lammina 9.5AL hypalon dinghy.. which replaces our (destroyed) Caribe from last season :/ So this is just a short unboxing and test drive video to show you some of it's features and what we think of it. After a long winter, we drop our lines and head East. We have to deal with a ripped main sail, an over heating engine and kids that get more lively as the days go by. Night watches seem to be the best time for peace and quiet but the amazing wildlife we see keeps us all going. It takes a while for the children to get their sea legs so they feel sea sick but Mum and Dad are too tired to do much as they keep the watches going and repair the breakages. We are still at sea after 3 days and 3 nights..trying to get to the Balearics...! We wintered in Almerimar marina on the Costa del Sol. Although Almerimar is probably more famous for it's miles of greenhouses and Golf Resort, we explored further afield and went walking in the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Alcazaba of Almeria. We also enjoyed the beach, the kite surfers and tried out the local skate park. We quickly discovered that USB devises on a boat are a necessity - not a luxury and our screen time actually increased when we moved aboard. The two USB plugs we had on the boat were woefully inadequate to cope with charging our phones, tablets, kindles, GoPro and other devises that accompany a modern, mobile lifestyle which would end up in a pile on the nav table. So the only solution was to install a whole lot more outlets for our USB devises. Instead of running more wires through already congested conduits, we replaced the 70's style 24v bedside lights with car 24v USB plugs and here's how we did it! Cueva de Nerja or Caves of Nerja are a series of caverns near Málaga, Spain which display and amazing array of stalactites and stalagmites - even the world's biggest stalagmite! These days the amphitheatre like chambers regularly house concerts but archeologists are uncovering cave paintings and remnants from hunter-gatherers and fishermen from more than 30,000 years ago!
